The small-toy wall is what most shops obsess over — dozens of SKUs, constant restocking, a lot of counter time for a modest rupee value. Meanwhile three or four activity toys standing in the corner quietly do the same money with a fraction of the handling. It is worth taking the category seriously.
What counts as an activity toy
Broadly, anything a child uses with their whole body or over a sustained session, rather than something they hold in one hand:
- Bead mazes and wire loops — table-top versions for the shelf, floor versions for waiting areas and playschools.
- Hammer benches and pounding toys — peg-and-mallet sets, the classic motor-skill purchase.
- Rockers and push ride-ons — wooden horses, animal ride-ons, push walkers.
- Building blocks and construction sets — plain, lettered and arch sets, sold by weight of play rather than by piece.
- Large puzzle and peg boards — the bridge between an activity toy and an educational one.
Why they carry the margin
Three structural reasons.
- Higher ticket, same conversation. Selling a ₹1,200 rocker takes about as long as selling a ₹60 top. Your time per rupee earned is dramatically better.
- Less price-checking. Customers know what a small plastic toy should cost and will compare. Wooden activity pieces are not commodity-priced in the customer's head, so you have room.
- They sell the rest of the shop. A rocker in the window brings people in. A wall of small toys does not, because it looks the same as every other shop on the street.
Treat your two biggest activity pieces as advertising that happens to be for sale.
Freight and packing reality
This is the honest downside, and any wholesaler who does not mention it is not doing you a favour. Activity toys are bulky and light — which means road transporters charge you on volume, not weight. Practical consequences:
- Freight can be a meaningful share of the landed cost on a small order of large pieces. Ask for freight to be quoted separately before you confirm, not after.
- Ordering them alongside a carton of small toys usually improves your overall freight economics — you are paying for the lorry either way.
- Insist on individual boxing for anything with a joint or a moving part, and ask for photos of the sealed cartons.
- Some pieces ship semi-assembled to reduce volume. Check whether assembly is needed and whether hardware is included before the customer discovers it.
Displaying them so they sell
Activity toys sell by being touched. Kept in a box, they are just expensive stock.
- Keep one of each assembled and reachable at child height. Yes, it takes damage. Treat that unit as a demo cost, not a loss.
- Put the biggest piece where it is visible from outside the shop.
- Group them by age band with a small handwritten sign. Parents scan for age before anything else.
- Place the small-toy impulse rack near the till, not near the activity pieces — you do not want a ₹40 top competing for attention with a ₹1,200 decision.
Buying them wholesale
Start with three pieces, not ten: one rocker or ride-on, one bead maze, one hammer bench or block set. That is enough to test whether your customers will spend at that level. If the rocker moves twice in six weeks, go deeper. If it does not, you have learned something for the price of one item rather than a carton.
