Why Channapatna wooden toys still outsell plastic on an Indian toy shelf

18 Feb 2026 · 6 min read · HBR Enterprises, Mysuru

Every few years someone declares that traditional wooden toys are finished — that plastic is cheaper, that licensed characters have taken the shelf, that children only want screens. And every year the tops, the rattles and the pull-along elephants from Channapatna keep moving off Indian counters. If you run a toy shop, a gift store or a stall at a temple town, it is worth understanding why.

What makes a Channapatna toy different

Channapatna is a small town on the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway, about an hour from our godown. It is known locally as Gombegala Ooru, the town of toys, and the craft there is close to two hundred and fifty years old. Three things define it.

  • The wood. Toys are turned from hale mara, sometimes called ivory-wood — light, pale and close-grained. It takes a lathe cleanly and does not splinter, which is exactly what you want in something a toddler will chew.
  • The lac. Colour comes from lac, a natural resin, coloured with vegetable dyes. It is pressed onto the piece while it spins on the lathe, then burnished with a screwpine leaf until it shines. That is why the colour sits in the surface rather than sitting on it like sprayed paint.
  • The hand. Each piece passes through an artisan. Two tops from the same batch will not be identical, and buyers who care about handmade goods treat that as the point rather than a defect.

The finish is the selling point. Hand a customer a lac-turned top and a plastic one and let them feel the difference — you rarely need to say anything else.

Why it sells at retail

Four reasons come up again and again from the shopkeepers we supply.

  1. It answers the safety question. Parents ask about chemicals and small parts before they ask about anything else. A one-piece lac-finished rattle answers both concerns in one sentence.
  2. It has an impulse price point. A spinning top is one of the cheapest things you can put next to a billing counter, and it still feels like a real object rather than a giveaway.
  3. It works as a gift. Return gifts, naming ceremonies, school prizes, visitors taking something home from Karnataka — a wooden toy carries occasion value that a plastic one does not.
  4. It does not date. Licensed plastic toys die when the film stops running. A wooden elephant on wheels was selling in 1990 and will sell in 2030, so unsold stock is not a write-off.

What to stock first

If you are adding the range to an existing shop rather than building around it, start narrow. A first carton that works for most shops looks roughly like this:

  • Spinning tops in three sizes — your volume item and your counter impulse buy.
  • Kili-kili rattles — the infant gifting item, and the one most often bought without the child present.
  • One pull-along animal and one train — these are your window pieces. They photograph well and they explain the category to a customer walking past.
  • A miniature kitchen or figurine set — the mid-price gifting option that fills the gap between a ₹40 top and a ₹500 ride-on.

Resist the urge to buy one of everything in the first order. Put four or five lines out, see what your particular street buys, and go deep on those in the repeat order.

Handling, storage and customer questions

Wooden toys are forgiving stock, but a few habits keep them looking new on the shelf:

  • Keep cartons off a damp floor. Wood and humidity are a slow problem, not a fast one, but they are still a problem.
  • Keep display pieces out of direct afternoon sun — lac colours are natural and will fade over months of hard light.
  • Tell customers to wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth, never to soak. Nobody should be putting these in water.
  • When someone asks "is the colour safe?", the honest answer is that traditional lac is a natural resin with vegetable colouring, which is precisely why this craft has always been used for infant toys.

Buying it wholesale

Two things matter when you pick a supplier for this category. First, how close they are to the workshops — every layer between the lathe and your invoice shows up in your per-piece rate. Second, whether they will let you mix. A small shop cannot commit to a full carton of one SKU, and a supplier who insists on it is really telling you they are not set up for retailers your size.

HBR Enterprises sits in Mandi Mohalla, Mysuru, an hour from Channapatna, and we buy direct from the workshops there. We hold the wooden toy range alongside educational toys, activity toys and bulk gifting, so a single carton can carry all of it.
