Starting a toy shop in India: opening stock, margins and a supplier checklist

22 Apr 2026 · 8 min read · HBR Enterprises, Mysuru

A toy shop looks like an easy business from outside. Bright stock, high footfall, children who do the selling for you. The ones that fail usually fail for the same reason: too much money locked into the wrong stock in the first three months.

What goes on the shelf in month one

Think of the shelf in four price bands rather than four categories. A customer walks in with a number in their head, not a category.

  • Under ₹100 — the impulse band. Spinning tops, keychains, small figurines, rattles. This is what pays your daily counter and what a child persuades a parent to add at billing.
  • ₹100–₹300 — the gift band. Stacking rings, knob puzzles, small blocks sets, shape sorters. Most of your unit volume lives here.
  • ₹300–₹800 — the considered band. Abacus, alphabet boards, bead mazes, larger puzzle sets. Fewer sales, better margin.
  • ₹800+ — the display band. Rockers, ride-ons, large activity centres. You will sell few, but they are what makes the shop look like a toy shop from the street.

The display band sells the shop even when it does not sell itself. Budget for two or three big pieces and treat them as signage.

How the maths usually works

Every location is different, so treat this as a shape rather than a promise, and build your own numbers before you sign a lease.

  • Retail margins in the toy trade commonly sit somewhere between a third and a half of the selling price, with wooden and handicraft lines usually at the better end and branded plastic at the worse end.
  • Your rent, your electricity and your staff cost come out of that margin before anything is profit. Work out the monthly gross margin you need first, then work backwards to the daily sales figure required. If that daily figure looks unrealistic for your footfall, the location is wrong.
  • Stock turn matters more than margin on any single item. A ₹40 top at a third margin, sold twenty times a week, beats a ₹1,200 rocker at half margin sitting for two months.
  • Keep a reserve. New shops routinely spend everything on opening stock and then cannot fund the reorder of the thing that actually sold.

Avoiding dead stock

Dead stock is the real killer, and it accumulates quietly. Three habits prevent most of it:

  1. Buy shallow, reorder deep. Small quantities across more lines in the first order; heavy quantities of proven lines afterwards.
  2. Write down what sold, not what you remember. Even a notebook at the counter beats memory. After eight weeks you will have a genuinely useful picture of your street's taste.
  3. Prefer timeless over topical. Character merchandise dies with the film. A wooden pull-along elephant does not.

Supplier checklist

  • Do they let you mix categories in one carton, so you can test widely on a small budget?
  • Do they hold stock, or do they order it after you pay? The second means unpredictable delivery.
  • Will they send photos or video of current stock before you confirm?
  • Do they issue a GST invoice in your firm's name?
  • Do they handle breakage and short counts without a fight?
  • Is there one person you can reach, or does every enquiry start from zero?

Planning around the season

Toy retail in India is seasonal in a very specific way. Plan backwards from these:

  • School admission and reopening months — educational toys and learning boards spike as parents get serious about readiness.
  • Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali — gifting, idols and decorative items. Book this stock early; suppliers run out, not the other way around.
  • Wedding season — return gifts in bulk, usually ordered by families and event agents rather than walk-ins.
  • School annual days — prize distribution lots, typically quoted per tier.

If you are opening in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu or anywhere within reach of road freight from Mysuru, HBR Enterprises can put together an opening carton across all four price bands. Send your city and your budget and we will suggest the split.
